As already said, this is a sort of cottage pie, as it's made with beef, however it's wrong. Sorry to be so negative, but it's an english recipe not Irish , and I've been making it for as long as I can remember.
There are better recipes to be found than this one. This recipe was fantastic! Like other's here I added a few little extra's into the mix. I also added a bug dollop of sour cream to the mashed potatoes before I spread them across the casserole Linda Cas. When I make any dinner with mashed potatoes I automaticly make way more mashed potatoes needed for that dinner, because I know I will make Shepherd's pie for dinner within two days. I made a few changes, which my husband said was the best shepherd's pie he has every eaten.
I used a can of drained peas and carrots and eliminated the 5 carrots , then I added a can of drained whole corn on top of that. I would recommend this to anyone. Bon Appetit This recipe was very tasty.
I was skeptical about not using any spices in the meat mixture as I am the type of cook who loves spices. I did add garlic as I cannot imagine cooking without it!!

This is the only way I can get my toddler to eat vegetables. Cooked an extra mins because of extra potatoes. Rating: 5 stars.
Like so many other reviewers, I changed this a bit. For the filling, I used the ground beef, 2 stalks of celery chopped , half a small onion diced , a oz can of kernal corn, a can of 'shrooms, and a couple handfuls of frozen peas. I omitted the celery soup. I did use a can of mushroom soup, plus a splash or three of milk and a few TBS of sour cream. Oh, I also used an 8" square pan for a thick pie, and it was almost overflowing - in fact, I put foil under it in the oven because the filling started to ooze around the potatoes!

I think it made the taste of the beef stand out a little more. I let it simmer for about 5 minutes until all the liquid was absorbed then added frozen mixed veggies and the soups. Heat 1 tbsp sunflower oil in a medium saucepan , then soften 1 chopped onion and chopped carrots for a few mins. Pour over ml beef stock, bring to a simmer, then cover and cook for 40 mins, uncovering halfway. Boil the g potato, cut into chunks, in salted water for mins until tender.
Drain , then mash with 85g butter and 3 tbsp milk. Put the mince into an ovenproof dish , top with the mash and ruffle with a fork. The pie can now be chilled and frozen for up to a month. Bake for mins until the top is starting to colour and the mince is bubbling through at the edges. Flash under the grill to brown, if you like. Subscriber club Reader offers More Good Food. Make beef mixture: In a large, ovenproof skillet over medium heat, heat oil.
Add onion, carrots, garlic, and thyme and cook until fragrant and softened, 5 minutes. Add ground beef, season generously with salt and pepper, and cook until no longer pink, 5 minutes more.
Drain fat. Stir in frozen peas and corn and cook until warmed through, 3 minutes more. Sprinkle meat with flour and stir to evenly distribute. Cook 1 minute more and add chicken broth. Bring to a simmer and let mixture thicken slightly, 5 minutes. Top beef mixture with an even layer of mashed potatoes and bake until there is very little liquid visible and mashed potatoes are golden, about 20 minutes. Broil if desired.
