When is autism month 2018

This past year has been an explosive one in the championing of diversity, equality, and the stamping out of sexual abuse and harassment to women — and we are delighted to know that this momentum is being picked up and addressed in the betterment of the ASD community. The United Nations, as is to be expected, made available a vast series of panels and talks that were broadcast live across the world and are still, for the most part, available via their host website 1.

Drawing inspiration from the MeToo and TimesUp movements leading to expose sexual harassment and abuse, the UN focused their efforts predominantly toward the empowerment of women and girls on the autistic spectrum. Other organizations to add to the dialogue this April did so through engaging and helpful ways. Raise money. Hold a bake sale. Sell items on eBay. Knit scarves and sell them on Etsy.

Think of ways to generate funds, and send the total to the organization that means the most to you. Spread the word. Share updates about your work on your social media channels with the hashtag AutismAwarenessMonth, or tag the organization you're supporting in each post you write. Attend an event. Organizations like the Autism Society hold fundraising events to spread awareness, celebrate, and generate funds. Head to an event close to you, or hold one of your own to raise money. Share knowledge.

Choose the products that resonate with your family, and share them with your community. You could change perceptions one person at a time. Spread kindness. Look for people with autism within your network and your community.

Find ways to brighten their days. Share a smile, say a kind word, or invite this person to a family gathering. Make this the month you celebrate real people with autism. Combat inaccuracies. Speak up when you see friends and family members sharing harmful or hurtful information during Autism Awareness Month.

Correct misconceptions with real data when you can. This form of independent advocacy is especially important in April, supporters say. Celebrate your family. Look for ways to draw your family closer together in April.

The IACC called for additional resources to cover these gaps, and for continued cooperation and communication within and across agencies and with the relevant stakeholders. Of course, communication is not enough. The National Autism Coordinator was also explicitly tasked with reporting to Congress on federal investments focused on people with autism transitioning from childhood to adulthood.

Kudos to then National Autism Coordinator Dr. Tom Novotny, and to Dr. Novotny in compiling the report, which outlines the need for research and services devoted to this crucial period in the lives of people with ASD. Since that report, Dr. Ann Wagner has been appointed to succeed him. Her expertise and knowledge about ASD will be of critical importance as she takes on this additional responsibility.

A lot has been going on in the research world in terms of enhanced understanding of the origins of ASD. Last year, I wrote of the genetic and neuroimaging data providing evidence that autism starts early , most likely during early fetal development but certainly within the first year of life. In the past year, even stronger evidence has emerged in support of this hypothesis. In July, we learned that machine learning algorithms can analyze neuroimaging findings in 6- to month-old infants at risk for autism and predict whether these children will go on to develop ASD.

And in February, a comprehensive genetic analysis demonstrated overlap between risk genes for ASD and other psychiatric disorders.
