The following year, Snoop Dogg confirmed Detox was finished. The first official release of anything from Detox came during a Dr. Pepper commercial. The album, however, did not come out. Dre line of headphones were, and said nothing about Detox. In , he confirmed that the project was dead.
It was completely reasonable to be excited about Detox until it was completely insane to think it would ever drop. He also released Compton , his third solo effort, and first in 16 years.
Dre was working on for 15 years. Even noted perfectionists like Dre release material. Instead, as Detox became more mythic in the hip-hop community, it served, whether Dre intended to or not, as a useful publicity tease even as the hype proved impossible to live up to. Between and , the best of the hundreds of song snippets he worked on were released. In such a rapidly changing musical universe, nothing recorded for Detox , no matter how inspired, was going to remain stylistically relevant over more than a dozen years.
But, some of the tracks I heard, oh my God, get the fuck out of here… Sound-wise, it was gonna be better than Chronic and , and idea-wise. A co-founder. One post in particular raised eyebrows about the possibility that Detox might finally come into fruition this year. Along with some of Dre's in-house engineers, other producers in the building who worked closely on Dre's last project include Focus The D. Talks of Dre putting out the mythical Detox album have been going on for over a decade.
The saga took an expected turn this week when it was revealed that he will drop a third album after all. A biopic Straight Outta Compton which premieres August 14th that will include all new music, including potentially the first songs from the seminal gangsta rap group since But problems had already begun to rise by the end of the year when Dre ditched the concept idea.
That project never appeared, and Ice Cube eventually left the label. More guests were leaked Mary J. No album fillers or nothing like that. No fast-forwarding. But by mid-year, Dre conceded that he was too pre-occupied with his Aftermath imprint. Still, the Detox dream persisted. Meanwhile, collaborators like Mike Elizondo and J. Rotem stoked anticipation in the press, and built a mythic status for the still-unreleased album.
In , Dre gave an extensive interview to the LA Times. Journalist Robert Hilburn suggested that, contrary to popular belief, the rapper had been working on his third album for the past eight years. Now what he heard may not be the actual Detox , but it could just be the Dr. Dre next album. He carries on in the interview, noting how good a producer Kendrick Lamar is and that his song "Thank You Malcom" on Flamagra , coming this Friday, is an ode to Mac Miller.
