In the fourth hour of NCIS season 19 , Gibbs and McGee made their way to Alaska in hopes of finally getting the answers needed to bring down a contract killer and the individual funding them. After jumping through a series of hoops and finally piecing things together with help from the rest of the team working the case back in the headquarters, McGee and Gibbs were able to crack the case, catch their killer and the conglomerate behind them, and stop the conglomerate from building their environment-poisoning copper mine.

With the case solved, it was time for McGee and Gibbs to make their way back home which is when Gibbs dropped a major bomb on McGee: he had no intentions of going home. As the episode came to an end, McGee boarded a plane home while Gibbs remained behind in Alaska. While Gibbs has been in some precarious situations over the years which left fans to wonder whether he was leaving the show, Gibbs always managed to make his way back to the NCIS team.

Unfortunately, this is not going to be one of those cases as Gibbs has left the team for good this time and will not be returning. After ditching the FBI and helping the hitman get to where he wanted to die, Gibbs had broken the law. He had every intention of serving time for his crime — he even told Parker right where to find him; however, after Parker saw all of the good Gibbs had done, he disobeyed orders to free him, which cost him his job.

Ultimately, Gibbs decided to remain there because he had found peace. The first peace he'd felt since the deaths of his wife and daughter, and he wasn't willing to let that feeling go. Harmon was ready to move on in NCIS season 18 but negotiated a limited appearance at the top of season 19 to make sure the series was renewed. Gibbs' character started distancing from his NCIS team last season after being suspended for the assault of a man who abused dogs. In May's season finale, Gibbs appeared to narrowly avert being killed off the show after his boat exploded.

McGee was also a character who seemed to be in a prime position for Gibbs' role, but when pressed for a reason why he didn't take the job he claimed: "I am not Gibbs. While it seems like no one is ready to fill Gibbs' shoes just yet, the position remains open and up for grabs in future. Fans were understandably beside themselves after Harmon's exit from the show following 19 seasons, and many took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the first episode without him.

While some felt the show wasn't the same without the actor, others were more accepting of his departure and welcomed Cole as his replacement. I honestly haven't laughed and enjoyed this show so much since Abby left.
