How many sightings of jesus after resurrection

Peter, for instance, was crucified. James was stoned. Paul was beheaded. Whatever they saw, it was worth giving their lives for. They sealed their testimonies with their blood. In order to explain away these Resurrection appearances, some scholars have speculated that the eyewitnesses were merely hallucinating.

In his excellent book Resurrecting Jesus , New Testament scholar Dale Allison surveys the available scientific studies and literature on hallucinations. In documented cases, he concludes, there are four things that do not happen or rarely happen. First, hallucinations are rarely seen by multiple individuals and groups over an extended period of time.

Second, hallucinations are rarely seen by large groups of people, especially groups of more than eight. Third, hallucinations have never led to the claim that a dead person has been resurrected.

Yet in the case of the resurrection appearances of Jesus, every last one of these rare or seemingly impossible circumstances has come to pass. The apologists for the faith say that the sightings of Jesus must, given the reports, have been objective.

One person can hallucinate, but twelve at the same time? And dozens over an extended period of time? What the reality was that gave rise to the experiences I do not know. Jordan Peterson, the popular professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, also belongs in this category. Even the original apostles did not believe the claim of the Resurrection when the women first told them Luke — Horatio is the skeptic of the group, and Hamlet challenges his disbelief of the supernatural in this exchange:.

Hamlet: And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Shakespeare speaks through Hamlet, telling us to expect the unexpected. Welcome the strange and extraordinary. So everything was secure by Friday evening according to our manner of describing days. The Sabbath day rest ended at 6p. That would be Sunday for us. I presume she came early once it was light even though the day time temperatures are not too extreme being about 65F in the middle of the day which would be about 17 or 18 degrees centigrade.

The 12 appearances of Jesus after his resurrection from Easter Sunday onwards are:. Sunday morning to Mary Magdalene.

John Mary Magdalene came to the tomb, presumably soon after the dawn of the day, one would imagine, the sun weakly putting its rays across the tops of the trees and rocky outcrops. One would not think that she was looking forward to attending to the body, but it would have been important to do this service to her Lord. But she finds the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Mary stands there crying and moving towards the entrance to the tomb sees two angels sitting inside.

Then turning around she sees Jesus, although she does not recognise him thinking him to be the gardener. Why she did not realise? It may be incorrectly assumed that Jesus in his resurrected form was not wholly human and therefore did not always chose to be like his former self and he may not be wearing his usual clothing. Then she knew and embraced him the resurrected Jesus who then sends her to spread the news by telling the disciples. The women returning from the sepulchre.

Matthew in verse 1 has Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. Mary Magdalene it seems had already left the scene but the other Mary was there and whoever came to help them, maybe Salome as recorded by Mark. Jesus speaking to them clearly marks that they knew him and this time, the scripture says, they fall towards his feet. This time the message was to tell his brethren. To whom is Jesus speaking? The Greek word is athelphous as in brothers literal or figurative.

It may simply mean the 11, or his relatives or the brethren in general. Appearance to Peter. First, in Luke we read of two disciples traveling to a village called Emmaus.

It was a little town about seven miles from Jerusalem. By then it was late afternoon, and the disciples asked Him to stay for dinner.

They went inside where they were, and Jesus broke bread again and blessed it. We can assume immediately after that Jesus appeared to the rest of the disciples except for Thomas. Remember, before it was late afternoon. It did not happen at Pentecost as most people believe, which was the day Jesus ascended to heaven. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained. By now, Jesus had visited His disciples four times. The fifth time was on the eighth day after His resurrection.

In John 21, Jesus decides to visit seven of His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias while they were fishing one morning.

Jesus invites them to eat breakfast with Him, and it was right after that Jesus takes Peter aside and tells him to feed His sheep. Thomas had not yet seen Jesus alive again though he had doubtless heard all about it from the other disciples. That was about to change. After having breakfast with some of the disciples at the beach that morning, Jesus again mysteriously appears in the middle of the shut upper room later that evening, and He tells Thomas to touch His scarred hands and His side.

Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. But we know at some point He met with him sometime before the disciples went to Galilee as was mentioned earlier.

This is an important meeting because that was when James was finally convinced that Jesus, his big brother, is the Son of God. James completely devotes the rest of his life to leading the early church alongside Peter. In fact, James came to be known as the lead pastor of the Jerusalem church Acts He became very influential and powerful, so much he was killed for it.
