Is it possible to do an ironman

You are embarking on a swim-bike-run journey that will test and change you like nothing else. Get prepared—and amped—with these insights from a triathlon veteran and former longtime editor of Triathlete magazine on what you can anticipate.

By doing hard things with increasing ease. When it comes to IRONMAN training, the name of the game is patient progression, and as you steadily increase your training intensity and volume you will see your body respond both in terms of performance and appearance in ways that will blow you away.

Balancing training for three disciplines with a job, family obligations and some semblance of a social life requires a fair degree of time-management wizardry. The sport of Ironman takes up a lot of time. Training becomes a big part of your priorities, and so the ability to train for this distance within a year will be largely down to your available time. You need to find the space in your week to do some long bike rides, swims and runs, and recover from them.

Often, new athletes think this can be solved by sleeping less , but this can be a dangerous precedent and result in burning out later.

Make sure you also allow for 8 hours of sleep. Consider the logistics over the whole year and in particular months before your race as that will be the time you are training the most. You could compare that with your training plan and see if you do have the available time.

Finally, consider the psychology of the sport. Ironman training is as much about the training mindset as it is about the race day mindset. You are asking a lot of yourself on race day, and a long-term commitment over the year, through sun or rain. You might see that we have started backwards: defining what an Ironman will take, looking for the minimum requirements to get there, finding a training plan, and ensuing we are fit enough to build the training plan.

This reverse engineering is an excellent way to ensure you create manageable steps into your Ironman adventure. When you can visualise the steps, you can decide whether you can or should do an Ironman within a year.

Either way, you want to be in a position that you enjoy the journey as much as the finish line. He is the founder and head coach of Tri Training Harder. Pingback: Een goed begin… IronManGirl. So forget doing half marathons.

Start doing 10ks. Move from there. Same story with cycling — do 30 minute sessions, higher intensity, before you start trying to get the mileage in. So your objective should be centred around increasing this threshold rather than the mileage. What do you weigh now? I just finished my first half ironman and will be doing my first full ironman this Fall. My two location choices are Los Cabos and Cozumel. Does anyone have experience in these ironman locations and have a suggestion for me?

I ran Ironman Cozumel in , it was my first and such a beautiful event and in my opinion a wonderful place for a first IM distance event! Hi The longest race i have done in my life is 10k after a 14 month fitness and diet that helped me to go from kg to 80kg. Now i started running every day morning on treadmill and im pretty much attracted to set to myself the challenge to finish an IM. How many weeks preparation would it take to get to a decent shape? Hello I am planning to go to my first Ironman in August I already complted few olympics and Would it be possible to provide some support?

I live in Norway so it is really difficult to run or ride from Mid October to March. How then a training calendar looks like. I am looking to do ironman canada in and need a training plan to get going I have been biking but nor running or swimming in 7 to 8 months. Is there a plan to get things moving in the right direction I can put in whatever hours I need to for training.

I play Aussie rules footy so my base level fitness is quite high. I can already comfortably swim 5km in a session continuously. I ride during the summer and can clock km in around 3 hours and my running pace is 4min kms for 10km.

Are there any sort of training plans for people with my base fitness around? Is this in Perth? I think if you want a really good time you should get that up near the mark for 1 hour.

Running is probably where you need to do the most work. Think your next objective should be 4min kms for 15km. To get this try doing 5ks at 3. Then see if you can extend the distance from 10k to 15k at 4 min pace.

Then go back and target pace for 10k and see if you can maintain 4 min pace upto 20k. You may unsubscribe at any time. Please see our Privacy Policy for further details. Sub Menu. My mother 72 is a lifelong runner that until recently with health issues isnt allowed to compete.

I have ran a few races with her in the past. Only to allow my mindset to settle into laziness and walked away. I am committed at 49 to compete in an event as soon as next fall. I am writing this as an accountability to myself.
